Wall Pattern Ideas for Your Home

Wall paint patterns are currently having a bit of a moment. From geometric shapes to clean lines, there is something very innovative and exciting about finding different ways to use paint on your walls and beyond.

Paint patterns will not only give your home interior a unique look, but they are also less permanent than wallpaper. This means you can update your home visuals more frequently without such a huge investment each time.

Whether you want to create a simple yet artistic mural for your bedroom or make use of a large colour palette for a big living room – patterns are much easier to create than you may think. Here is our guide to incorporating wall patterns using our exceptional Dead-Flat Matt expertly curated paint palette.

How to paint geometric shapes

Geometric shapes are very on trend right now. From bold designs to subtle schemes, a geo pattern can modernise the look and feel of your living space in an instant.

Here’s how:

  1. Use strips of masking tape or decorators’ tape to make the outline of your geo shapes. You can opt for a template or go off-piste with your own design.
  2. Choose your paint colours. Clashing colours or complementing shades? The decision is yours.
  3. Dip half of your brush bristles in the paint.
  4. Paint the inside border first and then use a roller to fill in the rest.
  5. Repeat the steps for your second section.
  6. Apply the second coat after 2-4 hours.
  7. Carefully remove the tape while the paint is still wet.
  8. When the paint is dry, put masking tape along the edge so it exposes the gap and fill it in.
  9. Apply a second coat once it’s dry.
  10. Remove the tape while the second coat is still wet and leave it to dry.

How to paint a circular shape

The modern trend for applying curved lines onto walls is set to stay. Painted semi-circles look particularly effective behind a low bed frame or sofa, where-as full circles can be painted around circular mirrors or artworks to create a striking second frame.

Here’s how:

  1. Draw your circular shape onto a piece of cardboard using a template.
  2. Cut out the shape to create a stencil.
  3. Grab some decorators tape and attach the cardboard to the wall in the position you want your pattern.
  4. Paint around the shape with a small brush. Brushing the paint inwards.
  5. Repeat with second coat after 2 hours.
  6. Carefully remove the cardboard and tape while the paint is still wet.
  7. Leave to dry.

How to paint wall stripes

Can’t decide which one of our expertly curated colour shades to choose from? Well, why not select more than one. Wall stripes are a great way to introduce a couple or a whole palette of inspiring colours to your space. Find out how to achieve the look with our simple step-by-step guide.

  1. Apply your background colour first. Wait until completely dry.
  2. Decide on the position of your stripes, then chalk out your lines.
  3. Arrange decorator’s tape in a straight line across your chalk lines.
  4. Using your next paint colour, on a roller and tray, apply the stripes. For a perfect finish, make sure you go just over the edge of the masking tape.
  5. Remove the decorator’s paint while the paint is still slightly wet.

Top tip:

Use different shades of the same colour with chunky stripes for a contemporary look.

How to paint wall chevrons

Chevrons are made using a similar effect to stripes but instead of just a couple of lines of tape, you’ll need to use a few short strips to get your desired effect.

Here’s how:

  1. Paint the entire accent wall with one of your chosen colours.
  2. Plan out your chevron pattern using a grid.
  3. Draw chevron pattern onto your wall.
  4. Using a high-quality painters’ tape, tape off your chevron pattern.
  5. Paint every other band your second colour choice – painting slightly over the tape.
  6. Peel off tape while paint is still slightly wet.
  7. Touch up areas where needed.
